IBM 46K4939 – POWER7 80mm Fan Assembly

The IBM 46K4939 is the 80mm fan assembly (also called fan FRU) for the IBM Power 780 (machine type 9179-MHB / 9179-MHC) and some configurations of the Power 770 (9117-MMB / 9117-MMC).

This is a hot-swappable, redundant cooling fan module that provides active airflow for the Central Electronics Complex (CEC) in these high-end POWER7 servers. It is a single 80mm high-speed fan housed in a plastic tray with a latch mechanism, designed to cool the processor books, memory DIMMs, and I/O components.

In the Power 780 (and multi-book Power 770), there are multiple fan assemblies (typically 6–8 depending on configuration) working together with N+1 redundancy. The system dynamically adjusts fan speed based on thermal sensors. If one fan fails, the remaining fans increase speed to compensate, and the system raises an alert via the HMC.

• 80mm × 80mm fan size (standard depth ~25–38mm)
• Hot-pluggable design (in redundant fan configurations)
• PWM-controlled variable speed (temperature/load-dependent)
• Front-to-back airflow direction (typical for Power 780 chassis)
• Integrated tachometer for RPM monitoring and fault detection
• High-RPM capability for dense, high-heat POWER7 processors
• LED or status feedback via system management

Model / Part Number: IBM 46K4939
Interface / Connector Type: Proprietary connector to Power 780 fan backplane/board
Capacity / Speed / Frequency: 80mm fan / Variable RPM (PWM-controlled) / High airflow for POWER7 CEC
Form Factor: 80mm chassis fan assembly
Spindle Speed (RPM): Variable (temperature/load-dependent; high RPM under load)
Sector Format / Firmware Info: N/A (Passive fan module)
Power Requirements: Chassis-supplied (12V DC typical) / Low power draw (~5–15W per fan, load-dependent)

Note: The Power 780 (9179-MHB) typically uses multiple 80mm fans (often 4–8 per chassis depending on configuration). Replacement is usually straightforward (hot-plug in redundant setups), but confirm your chassis layout and airflow direction (front-to-back is standard). Refurbished units are still available from IBM Power parts specialists. Let me know if you need sourcing help or related parts (e.g., larger chassis fans, heatsinks, air shrouds)!
