The IBM System x3650 M4 (machine type 7914 or 5460 in some regions) with Intel Xeon E5-2620 processor and 16 GB memory is a 2U rack-mountable, dual-socket enterprise server from IBM's System x generation (launched 2012), based on the Intel Sandy Bridge-EP architecture.

This is a very popular, reliable, and long-lived 2U server that was widely deployed in data centers, virtualization hosts, file/print servers, small databases, web/application servers, and backup targets during the 2010s and early 2020s.

The x3650 M4 is a dual-processor 2U rack server offering excellent balance of compute power, memory capacity, storage flexibility, and I/O expansion for its era. The Intel Xeon E5-2620 (Sandy Bridge-EP, 6 cores/12 threads, 2.0 GHz base, 2.5 GHz turbo, 15 MB L3 cache, 95W TDP) is a cost-effective, mid-range processor that provides solid multi-threaded performance for virtualization, general-purpose workloads, and moderate database tasks.

The 16 GB memory configuration typically uses 4 × 4 GB or 2 × 8 GB DDR3-1333/1600 ECC RDIMMs (registered DIMMs), delivering good bandwidth for the time (~40–50 GB/s total) and supporting up to 768 GB maximum (24 DIMM slots).

Storage and I/O are highly flexible:

  • Up to 8 × 2.5" SAS/SATA hot-swap bays (or 4 × 3.5" in some configs)
  • Integrated ServeRAID M5110e RAID controller (0/1/10 standard; optional cache/flash for RAID 5/6/50/60)
  • Multiple PCIe 3.0 slots for HBAs, NICs, GPUs, or RAID controllers

The server runs VMware ESXi, Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux, Ubuntu, CentOS, or older IBM-supported OSes — with full IBM/Lenovo validation and support for virtualization hypervisors.
