The IBM 01PL480 (also cross-referenced with part numbers 00VJ951, 38L7509, and alternate 01PL863) is an IBM LTO-7 Half-High (HH) SAS tape drive with an integrated single-slot loader (autoloader mechanism), designed for rack-mount or standalone tape automation in entry-level to midrange backup, archiving, and compliance environments.

This is a 1U rack-mountable LTO-7 tape solution that combines one LTO-7 HH SAS tape drive with a built-in 8-slot magazine loader, allowing automated backup/restore of up to 8 cartridges without manual intervention. It is ideal for small-to-medium businesses, branch offices, departmental servers, or remote sites needing cost-effective unattended tape backup, offsite vaulting, or long-term archival storage.

The drive uses Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 7 technology, delivering:

  • 6 TB native capacity per cartridge
  • 15 TB compressed capacity per cartridge (typical 2.5:1 compression ratio; real-world 2–2.5:1)
  • 300 MB/s native transfer rate (up to 750 MB/s compressed)

The integrated loader supports barcode scanning, sequential or random access to cartridges, and automatic cartridge loading/unloading via SCSI commands — making it function as a very small autoloader with one drive and 8 slots. It is fully compatible with major backup software (IBM Spectrum Protect, Veeam, Veritas NetBackup, Commvault, ARCserve, etc.) and supports LTFS (Linear Tape File System) for drag-and-drop file access.
